Only in the philippines

The president wants details and explanation on this so called “Palos act” of the former Batangas Governor Antonio Leviste. He was reported to have left the National Bilibid Prisons premises a couple of times. There was even a video of him wandering outside with his driver. Leviste, who is serving a 12-year sentence for killing of his long-time aide, Rafael de las Alas, inside his office in Makati City in 2007, slipped out of jail last week because he claimed that he had a toothache and wanted to go the dentist.
Diokno stated that Leviste, was a “living-out” prisoner in view of his age (currently 71), but he should have stayed within the 536-hectare prison reservation. On the other hand, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said she did not issue any permit to Leviste since she assumed office, making Leviste's wandering act illegal.
It is expected that an incarcerated person should stay and remain inside a penitentiary but this issue just proved us wrong, Diokno said he warned Leviste when he learned he had abused his privileges. He also said he could not monitor all the prisoners at the New Bilibid Prison. “What can we do? We have to guard 32,000 prisoners in Bilibid,” stated Diokno.
Last Thursday, The Justice Department formed a fact-finding committee to find out who should be held criminally and administratively liable for allowing Leviste to leave the prison. The department also filed a complaint of evasion of service of sentence against Leviste and his driver, Nilo Solis, a charge that carries a two- to six-year jail term.
Heres whats on the news last night:
MANILA, Philippines - The dentist of former Batangas Governor Antonio Leviste revealed the governor had no appointment for dental check up last May 18, the day he slipped out of New Bilibid Prison and was subsequently arrested by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents.
Florenda Yu, front desk staff of Dr. Pio Tripon, showed ABS-CBN their logbook showing that Leviste did not make any request for appointment on May 18.
"Walang tawag, walang appointment sa amin si Mr. Leviste," she said.
Tripon said every time Leviste visited his clinic, he communicates with escorts from the Bureau of Corrections. He said he checked on Leviste only twice since September.
Now, I couldn’t forget what Leviste stated during the press conference days ago, he said “As god as my witness, I’d be struck by lightning and be damned to eternal hell if someone else is responsible for my going out”. After what has been happening, Leviste still has the audacity to state those words. Money and power will never suffice to justify this matter. Who in the right mind would let a criminal go wandering out of prison? There is a good reason why they are locked up and there should be a better explanation on why Leviste was let loose. As for Diokno, do you think this is a joke? No! We’ll find out soon enough…
